Choosing a roofer

Do roofers need a license in Texas?

No. Texas has no state roofing license, so “licensed” on its own doesn’t mean much here. Ask any roofer for proof of insurance sent straight from their agent, a local address, a written contract with nothing left blank, and permits where your city requires them. We’ll send our certificate of insurance on request.

What should make me walk away from a roofer?
  • Pressure to sign today.
  • An offer to “handle your insurance,” or to cover or rebate the part of an insurance payout you’re responsible for — both are against Texas law.
  • Cash only, or a big payment long before materials arrive.
  • No physical address, or a contract that signs your insurance money over to them.
Can I cancel after I sign?

If you sign at your home, Texas and federal rules give you until midnight of the third business day after signing to cancel. The cancellation form is in your contract. We don’t order materials or start until that time has passed.

Inspections and insurance

What happens during a free inspection?

We look at the shingles, flashing, vents, pipe boots, valleys and gutters, and the attic if we can get to it. We take dated photographs and measurements, and you get a written roof record on your own private page. An inspection is a record of what is on the roof, not an insurance decision.

Can you tell me whether my insurance will pay?

No. Only your insurance company decides what your policy covers, and Texas law doesn’t allow a roofer to adjust or negotiate claims. Please ask your insurer or agent. We can show you what is on your roof, with dated photos.

Will you talk to my insurance adjuster for me?

No. Texas law keeps roofers out of that conversation. You get our dated photos and our price for the work; what you do with them is up to you. If you disagree with your insurer, the Texas Department of Insurance consumer help line is 800-252-3439.

Can you cover the part of the claim I’m supposed to pay?

No. Texas law requires the homeowner to pay their own share under the policy, and it is a crime for a contractor to waive, absorb or rebate it. Be wary of anyone who offers.

Permits, HOAs and timing

Do I need a permit for a new roof?

It depends on where the house is. The City of Houston and the City of Tomball require a re-roof permit. Much of Spring and Klein is outside any city, where Harris County generally doesn’t require one. We check your address, pull the permit wherever one is required, and put it on your roof record. With or without a permit, we build to the code and to the shingle maker’s instructions — that is what the warranty depends on.

Do I need HOA approval?

Usually, if you have an HOA. Most want the brand, line and color before work starts, and approval can take a few weeks. We give you the product sheet for your request. Texas law also limits an HOA from banning impact-resistant shingles that look like the ones it already allows.

How long does a new roof take?

Most homes are done in one to two working days on site. Bigger or steeper roofs, rotten decking and weather can add time. From signing to finished — with the cancel period, HOA approval and any permit — it is usually one to four weeks.

Materials and warranties

What’s the difference between 3-tab, architectural and impact-resistant shingles?

3-tab shingles are flat and basic, and several makers are phasing them out. Architectural shingles are thicker, look dimensional and are rated for higher wind. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles carry the top hail-impact rating (UL 2218). Some insurers give a premium discount for a Class 4 roof — ask your agent; we fill in the state form they need after installation.

Does shingle color change how hot the attic gets?

Lighter and “cool roof” shingles reflect more sun, but ventilation and insulation matter as much or more. Try colors on the 3D house, and we bring real samples before anything is ordered.

Do you tear off the old roof?

Yes, tear-off is our standard. It lets us find and replace bad decking, and most manufacturer warranties require it. If we find rotten wood, we photograph it and replace it at the per-sheet price written in your contract — you see the photos on your page.

What warranties do I get?

The shingle maker’s warranty on the materials, and our written workmanship warranty on the installation. Where a stronger manufacturer “system” warranty applies, we register it for you on time. Storm damage is not a warranty matter.

Install day and after

How do I get ready?

Move cars out of the garage and driveway the night before, keep pets inside, take pictures down from the walls, cover things stored in the attic, and unlock the gates. Your private page has the full list once your date is set.

Will my yard be full of nails?

We protect the landscaping, run magnetic sweepers over the yard and drive, and walk the property with you at the end.

How do I look after a new roof?

Clean the gutters in spring and fall, keep branches trimmed back, keep soffit vents clear, don’t pressure-wash the shingles, and look it over from the ground after big storms. We offer a free check one year after your roof is finished.

When do I pay?

The payment schedule is written in your contract: a deposit when materials are delivered, after the cancel period, and the balance after the final walk-through. We take checks and bank transfers, and we never ask for cash.
